Opening your first checking account is an important milestone and Patelco Student Checking (for ages 13-17) is a great choice to begin establishing healthy banking habits.
For a limited time, when your teen becomes a Patelco member by opening a Student Checking account with a $100 minimum deposit using code R7BWNBFB, we’ll deposit $50 into the savings account. If your teen also opens a Money Market account, we’ll deposit another $50 into Money Market account.

When you turn 18, easily convert to a regular free checking account
Your teen can open the account themselves or you can be joint owners so you can have more oversight of the account.
Your teen will need a valid unexpired US passport, state ID or drivers license, or school ID (with picture).
The best option is to visit a branch or you can also open an account online through our Virtual Branch.

That depends as every student and family is unique. Student Checking is available for teens aged 13-17. Some parents may want their teens to learn to manage their own money at an earlier age, while others prefer to delay until college. Allowing teens to manage their own money creates opportunities to teach good money habits and responsibilities. For example, your teen can learn to budget or save a portion of their allowance for a larger purchase.
Your teen(s) can open a Student Checking account by themselves. Alternately, you can choose to be on the account as a joint owner and have more oversight.
Yes! We don’t charge a monthly fee or require a minimum balance.
After your teen turns 18, they can upgrade their Student Checking account to a Free Checking account with higher withdrawal limits.
You will receive the debit card in the mail within 5 business days after you’ve opened your account. While you wait for your physical card to arrive, you can access and activate our digital card right away in Patelco Online™ or the Mobile App. Navigate to Account Services, then Card Management to activate and view your card. Use your digital card to shop online and then add to card to your Digital Wallet to make payments in-store and on the go.
